Medicare Advantage plans ending in 2027
Every fall, insurers decide which Medicare Advantage plans to keep, merge or drop for the next year, and CMS publishes a crosswalk of where each plan's members go. Some are moved into another plan automatically. Others find their plan is ending, or pulling out of their county, and must choose new coverage during open enrollment. This follows every member of an individual plan through that crosswalk, county by county.

How this was estimated
Members. Enrollment by plan and county comes from the CMS monthly enrollment file for September before each plan year, for individual Medicare Advantage plans (HMO, PPO, PFFS, including special needs plans). Employer group plans, PACE, cost plans and medical savings accounts are left out. CMS hides counts of 10 or fewer, so very small plans in a county are missed.
Where they go. The CMS plan crosswalk (the version released October 1 each year) lists each plan's status for the coming year and the plan or plans its members move into. A member counts as moved to a plan only if that plan's next-year service area, from the CMS Plan Benefit Package files, includes their county. Members whose plan ends outright are counted as plan ended. Members whose plan continues elsewhere, but not in their county, are counted as plan leaving county. Members in both groups get a special enrollment period to choose new coverage. Without a choice, they end up in traditional Medicare.
Plans and insurers. Counts of plans and insurers include only plans anyone eligible for Medicare in the county can join, not special needs plans. Insurers are grouped by parent company where CMS lists one.
Caveats. The crosswalk is preliminary; a few plans change status after October. "Moved" members keep coverage without acting, but their new plan can have a different network, drug list and costs. Members who are moved can still switch during open enrollment. Members of plans whose contract is new for the coming year are matched by organization name rather than parent company.
